More glass, less frame

Aluminium is far stiffer and stronger than uPVC for its size, so an aluminium window needs much less frame to hold the same area of glass. The result is the slim sightlines that make aluminium the first choice for contemporary homes and extensions, where the view is the whole point.

Modern aluminium frames are thermally broken: an insulating barrier runs through each frame between its inside and outside faces, so the metal does not carry the cold straight through. That is how today’s aluminium windows reach outstanding thermal performance, where the single-glazed metal windows of the past were notoriously cold.

We fit aluminium windows and doors for homeowners, and for the builders, developers and architects we work with on new-build and commercial projects, so we fit them on every kind of job, from a single opening to a whole development.

Why choose aluminium windows

  • Slim sightlines

Narrow frames let in more light and frame the view, which is why aluminium suits large openings and modern extensions so well.

  • Exceptional strength

Aluminium holds large panes of glass without bulky frames, and it keeps its shape for years.

  • Thermal performance

Thermally broken frames and high performance double glazing keep the heat in, and every replacement window has to meet the Building Regulations’ energy standard.

  • Built to last

Powder coated aluminium never needs painting, and the frames are made to last for decades.

  • A match for your doors

Aluminium windows pair naturally with aluminium bi-fold and sliding doors, so an extension can have one consistent look from end to end.

  • Modern or traditional

Most people choose aluminium for a contemporary look, but slim frames with glazing bars can suit an older house too, as our heritage-style bi-fold doors show.

Aluminium or uPVC?

Both make good windows, and the right choice depends on the house. uPVC is the most popular material for replacement windows and usually costs less. Aluminium costs more, but it gives slimmer frames, larger panes and a crisper, more contemporary line.

For a whole house of standard windows, uPVC is often the sensible choice. For a modern extension, a large picture window or a house designed around its glazing, aluminium is usually worth the difference. We fit both, so we can price them side by side for your project.

Whichever you choose, the window has to meet the same Building Regulations energy standard, so the decision really comes down to looks, sightlines and budget.

Building Regulations

Replacement windows have been covered by the Building Regulations since April 2002. A new window needs a U-value of 1.4 or better, or a Window Energy Rating of band B; glass within 800mm of the floor has to be safety glass; and a window that is there as a way out in a fire must give at least as much room to escape as the one it replaces. The work is either self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or approved by your council’s building control team.

Questions about aluminium windows

Anything else you would like to know? Call us, message us on WhatsApp or send us your question through our contact page.

Are aluminium windows cold?

Not modern ones. Today’s frames have a thermal break that stops the metal carrying the cold through, and with double glazing they meet the same energy standard as any replacement window.

Are aluminium windows more expensive than uPVC?

Usually, yes, because the material and the frames cost more to make. We give free, no-obligation quotes for both, so you can compare them for your own house.

Can aluminium windows go on an older house?

Yes, and slim frames with glazing bars can look very good on one. In a conservation area or on a listed building the council may expect a traditional material or style, so check before you order.

Do you fit aluminium doors too?

Yes. We fit aluminium bi-fold doors and aluminium sliding doors, and choosing aluminium for the windows as well gives an extension one consistent look.

Are aluminium windows good for large openings?

Yes. Aluminium’s strength holds large panes in slim frames, which is why it is the usual choice for picture windows, corner glazing and the glazed walls of modern extensions.

Can aluminium windows have glazing bars?

Yes. Slim glazing bars can give aluminium windows a traditional or industrial look, which can suit an older house or a warehouse-style extension.
