Double Glazing in East Sussex

East Sussex borders Kent, and the north of the county is closer to our Aylesford base than parts of Kent itself, with Crowborough about 26 miles away. We fit and repair windows and doors for homeowners across the county and work with developers on new-build projects there too.

Our work in East Sussex

The High Weald towns and villages in the north of the county, around Crowborough, Wadhurst and Mayfield, are the closest part of East Sussex to us, and the A21 takes us down to Hastings and the coast, about 44 miles from our base. Uckfield is about 35 miles away and Lewes about 43.

On the coast, salt air and wind are hard on windows and doors, so it is worth choosing hardware and finishes made for exposed sites. Inland, many villages have older cottages and farmhouses, where the look of the windows matters as much as how they perform.

East Sussex homes and the windows that suit them

Much of northern East Sussex is High Weald, an area of sandstone ridges and old villages that takes in Crowborough, whose hill is the highest point in the county. Many older houses here are tile-hung or weatherboarded, a style shared with the Kent Weald, and they suit flush sash windows and cottage-style composite doors that keep their character.

The coast is a different world, from Hastings’ old town and seafront to Eastbourne and the city of Brighton and Hove. Between Brighton and Eastbourne the chalk of the South Downs runs down to the sea and ends at Beachy Head, and towns such as Peacehaven, Seaford and Bexhill-on-Sea sit along the shore either side. Seaside homes take a battering from the weather, and aluminium or good-quality uPVC with sound seals is worth the investment there. In between, towns such as Lewes, Uckfield and Hailsham have a mix of period and newer homes, where energy-efficient casements, composite doors and bi-folds are the usual upgrades.

Planning and conservation in East Sussex

Planning in East Sussex depends on where you live. The five district and borough councils, Lewes, Wealden, Rother, Eastbourne and Hastings, cover most of the county and Brighton and Hove City Council covers the city, but inside the South Downs National Park the planning authority is the South Downs National Park Authority, and has been since 2011.

National parks and National Landscapes such as the High Weald can carry extra restrictions, as can conservation areas, so check with the right authority before changing the style of windows or doors on an older house.

Building Regulations

Whatever the planning position, new windows and doors have to meet the Building Regulations, which have covered replacement glazing since April 2002. A replacement window today needs a U-value of 1.4 or better, or a Window Energy Rating of band B, and the work has to be either self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or approved by your council’s building control team.

Questions from East Sussex homeowners

Anything else you would like to know? Call us, message us on WhatsApp or send us your question through our contact page.

How far into East Sussex do you go?

Anywhere within the 100-mile radius we cover, which takes in the whole county. Crowborough is about 26 miles from our base, Hastings about 44, Eastbourne about 48 and Brighton about 60.

Is my house in the South Downs National Park?

If you live in or near the Downs between Eastbourne, Lewes and Brighton, it may be. The South Downs National Park Authority’s website shows the boundary, and if you are inside the park it handles planning rather than your district council.

Do you cover the seaside towns, such as Seaford and Bexhill-on-Sea?

Yes, the whole coast from Brighton and Hove to Rye is inside our radius. Seafront homes get the worst of the wind and salt, so on those we would talk you through hardware and frame finishes made for exposed sites.

Can you fit windows that suit a weatherboarded cottage?

Yes. Flush sash windows sit level in the frame like traditional casements, and in colours such as white, cream or sage green they sit well on tile-hung and weatherboarded cottages.
