Our work in Ashford
Ashford has been growing for decades, and more is planned, including 5,750 homes at Chilmington Green. That suits us, because KM Glazing Services started out glazing new-build developments, and our About page names Ashford among the places we have worked on large housing schemes.
For homeowners, that background means we know how modern estate houses are put together, which makes replacing their windows, adding a composite front door or opening up the back with bi-folds straightforward. We cover the older parts of the town as well, and repair misted units, broken glass and faulty hinges and locks.
Ashford homes and the windows that suit them
Ashford has been a market town since the Middle Ages, but little of the old centre survives beyond the half-timbered medieval buildings of Middle Row and those around St Mary’s churchyard. Buildings like these, and the older cottages in the villages the town has absorbed, such as Kennington, Willesborough and Great Chart, need windows that respect their original openings, which is where our flush sash and sliding sash windows come in.
Most of Ashford’s homes are far newer. The railway made it a junction town in the 19th century, and housing estates have since filled the spaces between the old villages at Park Farm, Godinton, Bybrook, Stanhope and Kingsnorth. Finberry, a 168-hectare development to the south-east, began construction in 2013, and Repton Park stands on the old Templer Barracks, which closed in 1997 to make way for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and was sold to developers in 2002, with the Grade II listed Repton Manor House kept at its centre. For houses like these, the useful upgrades are energy-efficient uPVC or aluminium windows, a composite door in a colour that lifts the front, and bi-folds or sliding doors to the garden.

Planning and conservation in Ashford
Ashford Borough Council is the planning authority and has 43 conservation areas, including Queens Road and Lacton Green in the town itself, Kennington and Ball Lane, and Willesborough Lees. Permitted development rights are narrower in all of them, and the council’s interactive map shows the boundaries street by street.
On the newer estates the rules are usually simpler, but it is worth checking the original planning permission, because some developments are approved with conditions that remove permitted development rights. A listed building of any age needs listed building consent before significant work goes ahead.

Building Regulations
Whatever the planning position, new windows and doors have to meet the Building Regulations, which have covered replacement glazing since April 2002. A replacement window today needs a U-value of 1.4 or better, or a Window Energy Rating of band B, and the work has to be either self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or approved by your council’s building control team.

Questions from Ashford homeowners
Anything else you would like to know? Call us, message us on WhatsApp or send us your question through our contact page.
Do you work on new-build houses in Ashford?
Yes. New-build glazing is where the company started, and we are happy replacing units, fitting new doors or adding bi-folds to modern houses on estates such as Park Farm, Singleton, Kingsnorth or Finberry.
Which windows suit Ashford’s older buildings?
For medieval, Georgian or Victorian buildings we would look at sliding sash or flush sash windows, which follow traditional proportions. If the building is listed or in one of the borough’s 43 conservation areas, check with Ashford Borough Council first.
Do you fit windows in Repton Park?
Yes. Its homes, built on the old Templer Barracks, are among the newest in Ashford, and new developments are where the company started, so replacing units, fitting a new front door or adding bi-folds there is straightforward for us.
How far do you travel to reach Ashford?
