A wall of glass that slides open

A sliding patio door is made of large glazed panels, at least one of which glides sideways past the others on a track. Nothing swings into the room or out across the patio, so furniture can sit right up to the glass, and with the doors shut the panels give an almost uninterrupted view of the garden.

Aluminium suits sliding doors particularly well. Its strength lets the frames stay slim around very large panes, which is where the uninterrupted view comes from, and the panels run smoothly on their rollers even at a generous size.

We replace old patio doors as well as fitting new ones in extensions, and getting the opening right matters as much as the doors. The review below is from a customer whose new patio doors were harder to fit because of faults in how the originals had been installed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really happy with our new patio doors and would definitely recommend!

It wasn’t the easiest of jobs due to some faults with how the original doors had been fitted, but Kieran and his team member worked really hard to get everything sorted properly for us. They were both really friendly, reliable and kept us updated throughout, so communication was great from start to finish.

We’re really pleased with the finished result and really appreciate the extra work they put in to get the job done properly. Would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to have new doors fitted. Thank you again!

Choosing sliding patio doors

  • Panels and opening

Sliding doors have two or more panels that slide past one another, so part of the opening always stays glazed. More panels mean a wider gap when the doors are open.

  • Slim meeting stiles

Where the panels overlap, an aluminium frame can be very narrow, so the view is broken as little as possible.

  • Thresholds

The panels run on a track at the foot of the frame, and a low threshold makes it easier to step in and out. It is worth talking through at the survey.

  • Glass

Large panels mean large panes of toughened safety glass. In a sunny, south-facing room, solar control glass with a lower G-value stops it overheating in summer.

  • Security

Modern sliding doors lock at several points along the frame, a big improvement on the old patio doors many houses still have.

  • Looking after them

Keeping the track clean and free of grit keeps the rollers running smoothly. If your doors have started to stick, roller repairs are part of our repair service.

Sliding doors or bi-folds?

Sliding doors and bi-folds are the two ways to put a wide opening of glass into the back of a house. Bi-fold doors fold right back to open almost the whole width, which is hard to beat on a summer’s day. Sliding doors open less of the width, but give bigger panes, slimmer frames and a clearer view for the rest of the year, with nothing folding out across the patio.

For a narrower opening, French doors are often the simpler answer. We fit all three, so we can measure up once and show you how each would work in your space.

Building Regulations

Replacement external doors have been covered by the Building Regulations since April 2002. A new door needs a U-value of 1.4 or better, or a Doorset Energy Rating of band B (band C if more than 60% of it is glass); glass in a door, or in a panel beside it, within 1500mm of the floor has to be safety glass; and on a house built since 1999, a level threshold at the main entrance must stay level. The work is either self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or approved by your council’s building control team.

Questions about sliding patio doors

Anything else you would like to know? Call us, message us on WhatsApp or send us your question through our contact page.

Are sliding doors better than bi-folds?

Neither is better for everyone. Sliding doors give bigger panes and a clearer view when they are closed; bi-folds open more of the width. It depends on how you use the room and the garden.

Can you replace my old patio doors?

Yes. We take out the old doors and fit the new ones to the opening, and if the original installation had faults, we sort them out properly, as the customer review on this page describes.

My sliding door is hard to open. Can it be fixed?

Often, yes. Worn or dirty rollers and a blocked track are the usual causes, and our repair service fixes rollers, locks, handles and door alignments.

How much do sliding patio doors cost?

It depends on the width, the number of panels, the glass and the colour. We give a free, no-obligation quote once we have measured the opening.
