Our work in Sevenoaks
Sevenoaks is a commuter town with a long history, so its homes range from period houses around the High Street to much newer housing on the edges, and we fit windows and doors for all of them.
For larger properties, aluminium windows and doors, with their slim frames and big glass areas, are worth considering alongside uPVC, and bi-folds or sliding doors are a good way to connect a kitchen or extension with the garden. We also repair failed units, hinges and locks, which is often all an older window needs.
Sevenoaks homes and the windows that suit them
Sevenoaks had a market by the 13th century, and Knole House, begun by Archbishop Thomas Bourchier after he bought the estate in 1456, still dominates the town from Knole Park. Sevenoaks School, founded in 1432, stands at the south end of the High Street. The historic centre is a conservation area, and its older buildings need windows that respect their age, typically sliding sash or flush sash windows in a traditional pattern.
Sevenoaks is 21 miles from Charing Cross on the main line into London, and a large share of its working people commute, mostly to central London, which has kept house prices high and put pressure on the area to build more homes. The town grew along its main roads and now takes in Riverhead to the north-west, the largest of its outlying parts, along with Greatness, Wildernesse, St John’s, Hollybush, Sevenoaks Common and Kippington. Newer houses there suit energy-efficient uPVC or aluminium windows, composite doors and bi-folds. The villages beyond, from Otford and Shoreham to Ightham and Plaxtol, include older cottages where a more traditional look is worth keeping.

Planning and conservation in Sevenoaks
Sevenoaks District Council handles planning and has 41 conservation areas, ranging from the town centres of Sevenoaks and Westerham to small villages and hamlets. It can use Article 4 directions to bring changes such as front boundaries under planning control, and it has consulted on one for the Kemsing conservation area.
The council publishes design guidance for its conservation areas, which is worth reading before choosing replacement windows or doors for a house in one. A listed building, wherever it is in the district, needs listed building consent before any significant change.

Building Regulations
Whatever the planning position, new windows and doors have to meet the Building Regulations, which have covered replacement glazing since April 2002. A replacement window today needs a U-value of 1.4 or better, or a Window Energy Rating of band B, and the work has to be either self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or approved by your council’s building control team.

Questions from Sevenoaks homeowners
Anything else you would like to know? Call us, message us on WhatsApp or send us your question through our contact page.
Do you fit aluminium windows in Sevenoaks?
Yes. Aluminium windows and doors have slim frames, real strength and strong thermal performance, which makes them a good fit for larger openings and contemporary extensions. We fit uPVC as well, so we can help you compare the two for your house.
Do you cover Otford, Kemsing and Sevenoaks Weald?
Yes. We cover the villages around the town as well, from Otford, Shoreham and Kemsing to Sevenoaks Weald, Ightham, Plaxtol and Borough Green.
How do I find out whether my Sevenoaks house is listed?
Search for the address on the National Heritage List for England, which Historic England keeps. If it is listed, any change that affects its character, inside or out, needs listed building consent from Sevenoaks District Council before work starts, whatever its grade.
What should I check before replacing windows in the Sevenoaks conservation area?
Whether the house is listed, and whether an Article 4 direction applies. Sevenoaks District Council’s conservation area design guidance explains what it looks for, and we can suggest windows, such as sliding sashes, that follow the traditional pattern.
