Our work in Essex
Every trip into Essex starts at the Dartford Crossing, the only fixed road crossing of the Thames east of Greater London, where the M25 runs north through the tunnels and south over the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. Thurrock, Basildon and Brentwood are the nearest towns, all under 40 miles away, and Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea are just under 50.
For larger projects, our new-build side supplies and fits windows, doors, curtain walling and shop fronts, and the developers we work with across the South East include Essex schemes.
Essex homes and the windows that suit them
South Essex is the most built-up part of the county, from Thurrock along the Thames to Southend-on-Sea, the county’s largest settlement. Basildon and Harlow were both built as new towns after the Second World War, to rehouse Londoners whose homes had been destroyed, and both have grown a great deal since. A lot of the housing in these towns is 20th-century and brick-built, with simple openings that suit energy-efficient uPVC casements, composite front doors and aluminium bi-folds or sliding doors.
The centre and north of the county are more rural. Chelmsford and Colchester, both cities, have historic cores, and Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Britain. More than 14,000 buildings in Essex are listed, and villages across the county have timber-framed and weatherboarded houses where flush sash or sliding sash windows and traditional doors are the better choice. The coast, at 562 miles one of the longest of any English county, is cut deep by the estuaries of the Colne, Blackwater, Crouch and Thames, and homes along it take plenty of wind, which is worth thinking about when choosing hardware and frame finishes.

Planning and conservation in Essex
Essex has twelve district councils plus two unitary councils, Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea, and planning is decided by whichever one covers your home. Councils can designate conservation areas and make Article 4 directions, so if you live in an older town centre or village, check with yours before changing the style of your windows or doors.
Outside those areas, replacement windows of a similar appearance do not normally need planning permission, although a leaseholder may still need the freeholder’s or management company’s consent.
Check the rules with your district or unitary council
Building Regulations
Whatever the planning position, new windows and doors have to meet the Building Regulations, which have covered replacement glazing since April 2002. A replacement window today needs a U-value of 1.4 or better, or a Window Energy Rating of band B, and the work has to be either self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or approved by your council’s building control team.

Questions from Essex homeowners
Anything else you would like to know? Call us, message us on WhatsApp or send us your question through our contact page.
Do you really come over to Essex?
Yes. Essex is within the 100-mile radius we cover, and the south of the county is under 40 miles from our base via the Dartford Crossing. Get in touch with your postcode and a short description of the job, and we will let you know whether we can take it on.
Which Essex towns are closest to you?
Grays and the rest of Thurrock, about 29 miles away, then Brentwood and Basildon at around 36 to 38 miles. Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea are just under 50 miles from our base.
Can you work on a timber-framed or weatherboarded house?
Yes. On a house like this we would usually suggest flush sash or sliding sash windows that follow the existing openings. If it is listed or in a conservation area, the council’s consent comes first.
Can you replace windows in a new-town house in Basildon?
Yes. Houses from that era usually have straightforward openings, which suit modern uPVC or aluminium windows and composite doors, and new units will be far warmer than tired originals.
