Does Triple Glazing always have a better WER score?

Not necessarily. Triple glazing generally offers a lower U-value, meaning it provides excellent insulation and is very effective at reducing heat escaping from your home. However, the additional pane of glass can also reduce the amount of natural solar heat entering the property, resulting in a lower G-value. Because a Window Energy Rating (WER) considers both heat loss and solar gain, some high-performance double glazed windows can achieve a similar WER to certain triple glazed units. That doesn't mean they perform identically. Triple glazing can still provide superior insulation and help keep your home's heating inside for longer. The best option ultimately depends on your property, its orientation and your priorities for comfort and energy efficiency.

What exactly is a ‘Low-E’ coating?

Low-E (Low Emissivity) glass features an extremely thin metallic coating designed to reflect heat back into your home rather than allowing it to escape through the glass. This helps improve insulation and reduce the window’s U-value. Modern soft-coat Low-E glass provides excellent thermal performance while remaining virtually invisible, allowing plenty of natural daylight into your home without noticeably changing the appearance of the glass. For homeowners, this means warmer rooms, improved energy efficiency and less heat lost through the windows, while still enjoying bright, naturally lit spaces.

My room gets too hot in summer. What value should I check?

The G-value is particularly important for rooms that receive a lot of direct sunlight. If you have a south-facing room, large bifold doors or a conservatory, solar gain can cause the space to become uncomfortably hot during the summer. Choosing glass with a lower G-value, often known as Solar Control glass, can help reduce the amount of solar heat entering your home. This helps keep rooms cooler during the warmer months while still providing excellent insulation and energy efficiency during winter. The right glass specification can make a noticeable difference to year-round comfort, particularly in rooms with large areas of glazing.

U-Value: Keeping Heat In

The U-value measures how easily heat passes through a window. It is measured in W/m²K, and the lower the U-value, the better the insulation.

A well insulated window helps reduce heat escaping from your home, helping you maintain a more comfortable temperature and potentially reduce the amount of energy needed for heating.

G-Value: Making Use of Natural Sunlight

The G-value indicates how much solar energy passes through the glass and enters your home.

A suitable G-value can allow useful warmth from the sun into your property, helping make the most of natural solar energy. The right balance is important, as too much solar gain can also contribute to overheating in warmer weather.

WER: The Bigger Picture

A Window Energy Rating (WER) provides an overall indication of a window's energy performance, taking into account factors including heat loss, solar gains and air leakage.

For homeowners, this makes it easier to compare different window products and understand their overall energy performance.

Why Does This Matter?

Choosing energy efficient windows isn't simply about having a modern looking window. Good thermal performance can help make your home warmer, more comfortable and more energy efficient.

At KM Glazing, we can help you choose windows that suit your property while providing the performance, appearance and security you're looking for.
