Our work in Sittingbourne

Sittingbourne is further from our base than the Medway towns, but it is well inside the area we cover, and the process is the same as anywhere else. We start with a free, no-obligation quote, which means coming out to look at the property, talking through what you need and giving you a clear price.

We fit new windows and doors, repair failed units, hinges and locks, and glaze new homes and extensions, drawing on the new-build work the company was founded on.

Sittingbourne homes and the windows that suit them

Sittingbourne was a stopping point on the road to Canterbury long before it was an industrial town, but it was the railway, arriving in 1858, that transformed it. The local clay made it one of the country’s great brickmaking centres, with over 2,600 men working in the brick and tile trade by 1870, and paper making grew alongside it. It was a port too: barges built on Milton Creek carried Kentish produce to the London markets, and in 1904 the Lloyd paper mill built its own wharf there, served by the line that is now the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway. Many of the town’s older terraces date from that period, and on those, windows in keeping with the original pattern make the front look settled rather than patched.

Milton Regis is older than Sittingbourne itself and was once a Roman centre on Milton Creek, and it keeps its historic High Street. On the town’s more modern houses, uPVC casements, composite front doors and bi-folds are the usual upgrades, while on the older streets sliding sash or flush sash windows are worth considering where the front calls for them.

Planning and conservation in Sittingbourne

Swale Borough Council handles planning in Sittingbourne and has 51 conservation areas across the borough. Two are in the town, Sittingbourne itself, first designated in 1969, and Milton Regis High Street, designated in 1970, and the council currently lists both as at risk. Permitted development rights are narrower inside a conservation area, so check with the council before changing the windows or door on a house in either.

About seven miles east, most Victorian and Edwardian houses in the Faversham conservation area are covered by an Article 4 direction, the largest in the borough, so replacing their front windows or doors needs planning permission.

Building Regulations

Whatever the planning position, new windows and doors have to meet the Building Regulations, which have covered replacement glazing since April 2002. A replacement window today needs a U-value of 1.4 or better, or a Window Energy Rating of band B, and the work has to be either self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or approved by your council’s building control team.

Questions from Sittingbourne homeowners

Anything else you would like to know? Call us, message us on WhatsApp or send us your question through our contact page.

How far is Sittingbourne from you?

About sixteen miles by road from our base in Aylesford. It is well within the area we cover, and quotes here are free and without obligation, exactly as they are closer to home.

Do you cover Faversham as well?

Yes. Faversham is one of the towns we cover. If your house is in its conservation area, check the Article 4 direction first, because it covers most of the Victorian and Edwardian houses there and brings their front windows and doors under planning control.

Can you replace just the glass in my windows?

Usually. Whether the glass is misted, cracked or broken, we can normally fit a new sealed unit in the existing frame, and we manage to keep the frame about 90% of the time.

Is my house in the Milton Regis conservation area?

If it is on or close to Milton Regis High Street, it may be. That conservation area was designated in 1970 and is one of the two in the town that Swale Borough Council lists as at risk, so check the council’s map before changing the front windows or door.
