Our work in Canterbury
A lot of Canterbury is old and a lot of it is protected, so choosing windows here takes some care. The city also has one of the highest proportions of students to permanent residents in Britain, which means a large number of rented houses, and we work for landlords as well as homeowners.
For a let property, the priorities are usually windows and doors that are secure, easy to live with and cheap to maintain, and repairs that are done properly the first time. We cover the new housing on the edges of the city too, and our About page names Canterbury among the places we have worked on large developments.
Canterbury homes and the windows that suit them
The historic centre sits inside the ring of the city walls, first built by the Romans and rebuilt in the 14th century, with the cathedral at its heart. Together with St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church, the cathedral makes up a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many of the buildings around it are listed. The worst air raid of the war, on 1 June 1942, badly damaged the centre and parts of it were rebuilt afterwards, so medieval timber-framed buildings, Georgian and Victorian houses and post-war rebuilding sit within a few streets of each other.
Outside the walls the city grew steadily through the 19th century, from 15,000 people in 1830 to 24,000 by 1900, and much of the terraced housing just outside the walls dates from that growth. Further out are suburbs such as Hales Place and Thanington, and villages such as Sturry and Chartham. On older fronts, sliding sash windows and composite doors with traditional glass designs keep the character, while on newer houses standard uPVC casements and bi-folds give the best value.

Planning and conservation in Canterbury
Canterbury City Council handles planning for the city and has designated conservation areas across it. The World Heritage Site covers the cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church, and the council also uses Article 4 directions, which it maps on its website, to bring more changes under planning control.
Before replacing windows on an older house in or near the centre, check whether it is listed or covered by a direction, because either can mean an application. Where windows cannot meet the usual energy standard without spoiling a building’s character, Approved Document L accepts a centre-pane U-value of 1.2 or low-emissivity secondary glazing instead, which can help on historic properties.
Check the rules with Canterbury City Council
Building Regulations
Whatever the planning position, new windows and doors have to meet the Building Regulations, which have covered replacement glazing since April 2002. A replacement window today needs a U-value of 1.4 or better, or a Window Energy Rating of band B, and the work has to be either self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or approved by your council’s building control team.

Questions from Canterbury homeowners
Anything else you would like to know? Call us, message us on WhatsApp or send us your question through our contact page.
Do you work for landlords in Canterbury?
Yes. We work for landlords as well as homeowners, whether that means repairing a failed unit between tenancies, fitting a more secure front door or replacing a whole house of tired windows.
Can you fit double glazing in a listed building in Canterbury?
Sometimes. Any significant change to a listed building needs listed building consent from Canterbury City Council first. Where full double glazing is not acceptable, slimmer units or secondary glazing may be, and we can talk through what is likely to be approved.
Does living near the cathedral change what windows I can fit?
It can. The cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church make up a World Heritage Site, and many of the older buildings around them are listed or inside a conservation area, so check with Canterbury City Council before you change the look of your windows or front door.
Do you cover Whitstable and Herne Bay too?
Yes. Both are about six miles north of the city and among the towns we cover, along with Sturry, Chartham, Bridge and the other villages around Canterbury.
